4. How do schools get severe weather information?
Emergency Alert Radio System and NOAA Radio among other means.
Each school within the Tuscaloosa County School System has a NOAA Weather Radio that is part of the Tuscaloosa County, State of Alabama and National Emergency Alert Radio Network. All advisories issued from any of these agencies are received by each school. This radio system is tested by the Birmingham National Weather Service office monthly.
All National Weather Service Watches and Warnings are disseminated via email and text message to all district administration and local school administrators.
The School System also utilizes VHF-UHF frequencies and its VOIP Communications Network to provide each school with weather updates. Text messaging, email and voice communications are used to keep local schools updated for changing weather situations.
